Should You Mount Your TV Above the Fireplace?
A fireplace can be a workable TV location only when the equipment requirements, wall support, viewing position and cable route all fit the setup. Evaluate those separately before drilling. If heat or the required clearances make the location unsuitable, a different wall is the better plan; a tilt bracket does not solve that problem.

Begin With the Fireplace and TV Models
Identify whether the fireplace is wood-burning, gas or electric, and find the relevant equipment guidance. The exterior finish does not tell you the heat output, internal construction or required clearances. Samsung’s wall-mounting guidance advises against fireplace placement; review your specific TV and fireplace instructions rather than copying another room.
A photograph can help us plan the questions. It cannot establish everything behind the wall or certify that the location is suitable. Do not treat an unused fireplace as an automatically approved mounting surface.
Review Four Decisions Together
- Heat and clearance: check the requirements of both the fireplace and TV.
- Support: identify the wall assembly behind brick, stone, tile or drywall.
- Viewing: compare the screen outline with the main seating and mantel.
- Connections: decide how power, signal cables, boxes and soundbar will be arranged.

Two Real Fireplace Finishes
This 55 inch installation in St. Matthews shows the TV above tan brick. A separate stacked stone project shows a screen above a wood mantel. Both document completed layouts; neither photo identifies a universal cable path or approves another fireplace’s internal structure.
Choose the Mount for Its Actual Movement
Fixed, tilt, full motion and pull-down mounts do different things. A tilt bracket changes angle without lowering the display. Full motion may extend and turn but is not automatically a lowering mechanism. A MantelMount requires its own compatibility and clearance review and is not a standard bracket upgrade.
We mark the position with blue tape so you can view it from your seating before drilling. Consider a nearby wall if the only available fireplace position is uncomfortable.
Know the Cable Limit Before Choosing a Finish
We do not conceal cables through a wood-burning fireplace or chimney. Where suitable, a surface raceway can organize standard-TV cables outside that structure. Other concealment routes depend on the wall and equipment. Art TV packages offer concealed or non-concealed finishes; do not select an ordinary raceway option for an Art TV.
Plan a soundbar’s clearance and cable finish separately. Read cable management before deciding where the devices should live.
Prepare Photos That Answer Useful Questions
Send a wide photo of the whole fireplace, a closer view of the surface, the mantel depth, nearby outlets and the TV and mount models. Include the fireplace type and any soundbar. Avoid a tightly cropped TV photo that leaves out the part of the wall we need to assess.
Pricing and Common Misunderstandings
The standard drywall entry price is not a quote for every fireplace. Choose the actual surface, TV, bracket and finish on the pricing page. Custom walls, pull-down mounts and unusual access need their own scope. A decorative mantel is not a guarantee of heat protection, and “all cables hidden” is not available for every route.
Questions Homeowners Ask
Can a TV go above an electric fireplace?
It depends on the fireplace and TV requirements, clearances and wall support. “Electric” does not remove those checks; see our electric fireplace service.
Can the TV be mounted into stone instead of the wall behind it?
The supporting assembly must be identified. Decorative veneer or mortar is not automatically suitable support for the bracket.
Can I lower the TV while a fireplace is running?
Follow the specific fireplace, TV and mount instructions. A lowering bracket must not bring the TV or cables into an unsuitable heat zone.
What if the fireplace is not a good location?
Consider another wall or a different room arrangement. We should agree on a suitable position before any installation begins.
