Fixed, Tilt or Full Motion: Which TV Mount Fits Your Room?

Choose a fixed mount for a single viewing position with little need to move the screen, a tilt mount to adjust the vertical viewing angle, or full motion when you need the TV to turn or extend. The right bracket must also match your TV’s weight, mounting pattern and wall.

In this guide

Compare the Movement You Actually Need

Typical bracket functions; check the specific model’s specifications
MountUseful whenCheck before choosing
FixedYou watch mainly from directly in front of the screen and want a low profile.Access to plugs, cable bends and the final viewing height; the screen cannot be turned toward another seat.
TiltYou need to angle the screen up or down, including some positions above seated eye level.Tilt range and clearance behind the screen; not every tilting bracket extends or swivels.
Full motionYou use several seating positions or need the screen to turn toward an adjoining space.Extension, swivel clearance, wall attachment and cable slack through the full movement.

This distinction follows SANUS’s mount-selection guidance. Features vary by bracket, so choose by the model specifications rather than the mount name alone.

TV Size Is Not a Compatibility Check

Bring the TV’s model number and the mount’s model number if you already have one. The weight limit, VESA mounting pattern, attachment hardware and wall construction must all fit the installation. For a large screen, check the available swivel angle too: the edge of the TV may meet the wall before the arm reaches its advertised rotation.

See our 85 inch installations and large TV service. Art TVs use their own mounting requirements; a flush Samsung Frame installation is a different choice from an extending standard bracket.

Compare Complete Installation Prices

One standard 32 to 85 inch TV on drywall, using your compatible mount and without a soundbar, is $210 with visible cables, or $360 with cables completely hidden where the wall and cable route allow it. Supplied mounts, other surfaces and added services change the total.

Our price comparison shows your compatible mount, a supplied tilt mount and a supplied full motion mount, each with the two cable finishes. These examples apply to a standard 55, 65 or 75 inch TV on drywall without a soundbar. We do not advertise a separate supplied fixed-mount package; select your compatible mount if you already own one.

Cables, Soundbars and Fireplaces

With a moving mount, cables need enough room to move without pulling on the connectors. Decide where connected equipment will live before choosing concealed cables or a raceway. A soundbar attached to the TV may move with it; a wall-mounted soundbar stays in place. The equipment and mounting system determine which arrangement is suitable.

Above a fireplace, ordinary full motion does not automatically lower a TV or make the location suitable. Check the viewing height, fireplace requirements and pull-down mounting options separately.

Mistakes to Avoid When Buying a Mount

Do not buy by diagonal range alone, expect every full motion bracket to lower the TV, or use tilt to solve a heat problem above a fireplace. Confirm the needed movement first, then check the model, wall and cable route. A bracket you already own must have its required parts and be appropriate for the new TV.

For a TV that turns with a soundbar, plan the combination with our soundbar guide. For a fireplace, check the viewing position and mantel clearance.

Questions Homeowners Ask

Can you install the mount I already own?

Yes, when it is compatible with your TV and the wall and has the required components. Installation workmanship still has the stated one-year warranty; damage to a customer-provided bracket is excluded.

Does a tilt mount turn left and right?

Do not assume it does. A basic tilt bracket changes the vertical angle. Check the exact bracket if swivel or extension is important.

Should every room use full motion?

No. If you watch from one position and rarely need access behind the screen, another compatible bracket may provide everything you need. Choose useful movement, then check the complete installation price.
